Why did we stop offering free access to our content and open educational resources (OER)?

For over a decade, we have proudly provided free access to our learning modules and other Open Educational Resources (OER), believing in the importance of making knowledge accessible to all. However, this practice has become increasingly unsustainable and is now threatening the very existence of our work. After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue free access to our learning modules to protect our mission and the longevity of our educational platform.

Unlike most OER content, which is typically static (e.g., textbooks and PDFs) and/or inexpensive to host and maintain, our learning modules are dynamic, interactive, and require substantial infrastructure to deliver effectively. They are hosted on high-performance servers to ensure smooth functionality, and they demand ongoing software and content updates, regular technical support, and quality assurance. As our audience has grown, so too has the demand on our resources—well beyond what we can support at no cost.

While this change may be disappointing to some, our commitment to keeping prices low and accessible for most students remains unchanged. Over the past 15 years, our prices have rarely increased, and our content continues to offer exceptional value compared to many other instructional resources in higher education. To ensure affordability worldwide, country-based pricing will remain in place. We’re also reinstating lifetime access—purchased modules will remain available to you indefinitely, as long as they’re offered. And as always, the Open Behavioral Science website will continue to be supported, reflecting our ongoing dedication to open access and the sharing of knowledge.

Our modules will remain available for purchase individually, as part of a coursepack, or as part of a group license. If you are an instructor or trainer, you can learn more about the ways you can integrate our content into your teaching with our Instructor Guide. One key advantage of the paid version of our content is the built-in accountability it provides. Completion is fully tracked and verifiable—students receive certificates of completion, and instructors can easily confirm that learners have meaningfully engaged with and mastered the material.
