Can I include optional modules in my coursepack?

Yes and no. Every module you include in a coursepack must be purchased when the coursepack is purchased. In other words, coursepacks are "all or nothing" in terms of the modules they include. Students will not be able to pick and choose which modules are purchased as part of the coursepack. Thus, the core courespack for your course should only include modules you want all students to complete.

If you'd like to assign optional modules for your course, you could do one of two things:

  1. If you do NOT need to track their progress and performance on the optional module(s):
    1. Simply ask the students to complete the free, open-access version of the module (or purchase the coursepack edition of the module if they want to make sure their progress is preserved).
  2. If you DO want to track their progress and performance on the optional module(s):
    1. Create a separate coursepack just for the optional module(s). For example, you might have a core coursepack titled "ABA 101" and a coursepack for optional modules titled "ABA 101: Extra Credit."
    2. A separate group will be created for this coursepack, so you will be able to track the completion of students who purchase it. You will access the completion data from the myTeaching dashboard, but It will be separate from the main group for your course.
    3. Remember that the same limitation applies to any coursepack on our site: all of the modules you include will be purchased with the coursepack. Thus, if you want to include several optional modules, you may need to create a separate coursepack for each.

This can be a bit confusing, so let's look at a few sample scenarios.

EXAMPLE 1: A course with required modules but no optional modules

  • Create one coursepack with all of the required modules included (e.g., "Coursepack for ABA 101").

EXAMPLE 2: A course with required modules and one optional module

  • Create one coursepack with all of the required modules included (e.g., "Coursepack for ABA 101").
  • Create a second coursepack with the optional module included (e.g., "Coursepack for ABA 101 - Optional").

EXAMPLE 3: A course with required modules and two optional modules

  • Create one coursepack with all of the required modules included (e.g., "Coursepack for ABA 101").
  • Create a second coursepack with one of the optional modules included (e.g., "Coursepack for ABA 101 - Extra Credit #1")
  • Create a third coursepack with the other optional module included (e.g., "Coursepack for ABA 101 - Extra Credit #2")
